I am an enthusiastic student of art. I am excited by the use of materials and media that are new to me, and by exploring new techniques and developing existing ones. At times I surprise myself by what I can achieve, yet I do not consider myself an ‘artist’. I create artworks for my own amusement and sense of personal achievement, and whilst my artworks are often created as a result of a concept or other source of inspiration, I would hope the viewer of my creations will either like them or not based on whether they are aesthetically pleasing, rather than because they fit with some fashionable or avant-garde idea.
My artistic style is ‘eclectic’. The sources of inspiration for my artworks, whether 2D drawings or paintings, 3D sculpture or assemblage, tends to comes from ‘my world’. At times this has an insular perspective, and most often related to life experience. My themes often relate to personal identity and social relationships, and the world of work. Most recently I have been creating artworks including textiles, paintings, prints and 3D wearable art with themes around work, and in particular post-industrial employment. On a personal level I have been exploring the symbiotic relationship between my professional career in human resource management, and personal experience of work, alongside the development of a creative life.
